(DIY) Living Room

The Plan

An urgent need for storage has made this room a priority! (Feb 25th 2010) There is so much stuff in the middle bedroom that we simply do not want to throw/give away... mainly books and movies and so on. They need a new home. And the Living room makes sense, yes? Only right now there isn't enough storage space in the Living room to put all this stuff, and the kids toys.

We've been keeping the toy boxes in front of the TV as a bit of a barrier to the telly itself, and the storage boxes kept in the TV stand. This isn't enough any more!

The left side of the chimney stack is where we store the rest of the toys, and the kiddies books. It also homes the DVDs and videos for the kids.

The right alcove already has some of the stacking cubes in. I keep the "grown up" stuff here, books and DVDs etc, and the nappies and wipes etc for the kids.

These are the old colours which used to match the old suite. The current suite isn't as good against the terracotta!

So Mark is making some, and I am buying some. And there is no point in doing all that and not doing the redecorating that does also need to be done at some point. Makes sense to do it all at once!

We've chosen our colours and I have been out to buy them, the storage is on order / being built, and Jack and I have made plans to be else where for a few days! No, we're not skipping out on the hard work :oD Mark doesn't want us around the paint fumes with Jack being so young and me being pregnant. Plus, with Jack around there is only a very limited window in the day when any painting / papering can be done. Add to that the power cuts we are getting weekly there is no way of being certain we can do anything in the evening once Jack is in bed because we wont be able to see!

Mark is making a base unit to set these cubes on to give us added storage, and also allow access to the power sockets. The cubes don't quite fill the alcoves they are going in either, so he plans to make a CD / DVD rack in the remaining space to make best use of the room and to keep it flush and tidy looking. We already have some of the cubes. I bought and knocked them together when I was expecting Jack. For cheap flat-pack they are pretty good so since they were on offer (3 for less) I've ordered 6 more, 2 of each. They are stackable. The open spaces are ideal for books, ornaments, anything you want to display, and the closed spaces are perfect for hiding away the stuff you don't (in our case that has been bottles of calpol, packets of nappies and wipes etc. Stuff that needs to be close to hand but out of site).

PROGESS REPORT

Diary:

These pics were taken on my mobile (as I left the camera at my mums). The last bit of painting was done when I got there, we put the 6 new cubies up, and popped to B&Q for some bits and a new light fitting (not up yet).

After I took these pics Mark started to bring me boxes of stuff to unpack, and that's what I did for the rest of the day.

By the end of the day (we've given up at 10.30pm ready for bed) it's starting to look like home again, but there's still so much stuff to sort out! I'm back to mums in the morning as she is working in the afternoon and can't look after Jack.

Mark thinks we can come back on Sunday.... I hope so! I like being at mums, but as they say "There's no place like home"
